In the United States, it opened at #1 on its opening day, making $15.6 million, with a weekend gross of $55.1 million, for an average of $17,615 from 3,127 theaters. It had the sixth-highest three-day opening weekend of any film, behind toy story 2, X - man, Mission: Impossible 2, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. It surpassed Batman Forever with the largest opening weekend for a Jim Carrey film. It had the biggest opening weekend for a Ron Howard film, smashing the previous record held by Ransom. It was the first non-Disney film to win the Thanksgiving weekend box office since Mrs. Doubtfire in 1993. It held the record for the highest opening weekend for a Christmas-themed film for 18 years, until the 2018 film version of The Grinch surpassed it with $67.6 million.

It follows the Grinch , a grouchy, solitary creature who tries to cancel Christmas by stealing Christmas gifts and decorations from the homes of the nearby town of Whoville on Christmas Eve. Miraculously, the Grinch realizes that Christmas is not all about money and presents.The 2000 Christmas fantasy comedy film How the Grinch Stole Christmas, often known as Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas or simply The Grinch, was directed by Ron Howard and produced by Brian Grazer from a screenplay by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. It is based on the same-titled children's book by Dr. Seuss, published in 1957. It was the second adaptation of the book, following the animated TV special of the same name from 1966, and the first Dr. Seuss novel to be made into a full-length feature film (and the first of only two live-action Dr. Seuss films, followed by The Cat in the Hat in 2003).

Dr. Seuss's well-known children's story is brought to life in this movie, with Jim Carrey playing the lonely green Grinch who seeks to spoil Christmas for the merry people of Whoville. The Grinch reluctantly descends from his hilltop residence with his helpless dog, Max, and creeps into town to steal anything holiday-related from the Whos. But the sour grump's ambitions are derailed when he meets the adorable Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).When The Grinch was a baby, two women in Whoville took him in and raised him. The shy Grinch secretly felt the same way about Martha May Whovier, a girl in his class, when they were both at school. He was bullied by a classmate named Augustus May, who was envious of Martha's attention. The young Grinch created an angel for Martha that Christmas, but when MayWho naughtily hinted he was developing a beard, he sliced his face while trying to shave. All but Martha laughed at him the following day when MayWho, the teacher, and the rest of the class noticed his cut face, which caused him to lose his fury, announce his hatred for Christmas, and leave to Mount Crumpit, where he has ever since led a solitary, cunning life.
