The Menu movie Storyline/Plot

Tyler Ledford, a food fanatic, and Margot Mills, his date, take a boat to Hawthorn, a posh eatery run by well-known chef Julian Slowik on a private island. Aside from Slowik's alcoholic mother, the dinner also includes food critic Lillian Bloom, her editor Ted, wealthy regulars Richard and Anne Leibrandt, washed-up actor George and his personal assistant Felicity, business partners Soren, Dave, and Bryce, and wealthy regulars Richard and Anne Leibrandt. Elsa, the restaurant's maître d'hôtel, gives the group a tour of the island while pointing out that Margot was not Tyler's invited guest for the evening.

As dinner is served, Chef Slowik introduces each entrée while delivering a creepier monologue about it. For the third course, tortillas are laser-printed with graphics that reveal unflattering facts about each visitor, such as affairs or embezzlement. There is a panic after the fourth course when a sous-chef commits suicide in front of the diners, but the crew calms things down by chopping off one of Richard's fingers. Then Slowik drowns Hawthorn's angel investor, to whom he had to transfer ownership of the eatery in order to survive the COVID-19 epidemic. The female guests eat while the male guests are served the fifth course, which starts with Slowik allowing himself to be stabbed by a female colleague he sexually harassed.

Slowik explains each guest was invited because they either contributed to him losing his passion for his craft or because they make a living off exploiting the work of artisans and workers like him and his team. He announces that everyone present will be dead by the end of the night. Since Margot's presence was unplanned, Slowik privately gives her the choice of dying either with the staff or the guests, but he refuses to let her leave.

Margot is revealed to be Erin, an escort. Tyler was notified that the guests would be murdered months before the dinner, according to Slowik. Despite this, Tyler was so determined to learn Slowik's technique that he kept it a secret and hired Erin to stand in for his ex-girlfriend for the evening as Hawthorn did not have seating for parties of one. Tyler is made to cook in front of Slowik, who then gives him the go-ahead to hang himself.

Erin is asked to go get a barrel that Slowik needs for dessert. Erin sneaks into Slowik's home while on the way and is attacked by an envious Elsa. In self-defense, Erin stabs Elsa in the neck and kills her. Erin discovers a radio, makes a help call, and then returns to the restaurant with the barrel after spotting a framed newspaper clipping describing Slowik's former happy life as a burger cook in a fast food establishment. The guests are informed that a Coast Guard officer has arrived from his boat, but when they are satisfied that they have been saved, he discloses that he is actually a line cook and departs for the kitchen.

Erin complains that she is still hungry as Slowik's "loveless" cooking and dishes are being readied for dessert. Erin says she would like a cheeseburger when Slowik asks what she wants to eat. Slowik is moved by her modest request, makes the dish with enthusiasm after being inspired by her request, and after she asks to take it "to go," he and the crew let her go. Erin leaves the island by boarding a nearby Coast Guard boat.

The dessert is an upscale version of s'mores; the staff covers the floor with graham cracker crumbs and dresses the guests in marshmallow stoles and chocolate top hats. Then Slowik sets the restaurant on fire, blowing himself up along with the patrons and workers as the barrel explodes. Erin unpacks her hamburger while she observes from the boat, bites through it, and wipes her mouth with a piece of the menu.

 Honest Review of Public

The Menu isn't the first to satirise the rich and their incompetence and isn't saying anything new but that definitely doesn't prevent it from being a great satire that pokes fun at everything it can in ways that are often consistently funny, playful and extremely stylish.
Ralph Fiennes gives a terrific performance full of awkward unease that only enhances his commanding screen presence. Anya Taylor-Joy is a perfect audience surrogate amongst a sea of deliberately unlikeable characters of which the best is Nicholas Hoult whose almost too good at making his character hilariously pathetic.
Mark Mylod's direction is excellent, the film has more than enough visual style to match the pretentiousness of its characters and is really good at building tension. The music by Colin Stetson is fantastic, striking a unusual balance between beautiful and unnerving.
