The Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 American psychological horror film written and directed by Ted Tally, based on the 1988 Thomas Harris novel of the same name. Jodie Foster plays Clarice Starling, a young FBI agent in training who is on the prowl for "Buffalo Bill," a serial killer who skins his female victims. She consults the cannibalistic serial killer and brilliant psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), who is currently incarcerated, for assistance on how to catch him.
The Silence of the Lambs was released on February 14, 1991, and grossed $272.7 million worldwide on a $19 million budget, becoming the fifth-highest-grossing film of 1991 worldwide. It premiered at the 41st Berlin International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Bear, while Demme received the Silver Bear for Best Director. It became the third and most recent film (the other two being 1934's It Happened One Night and 1975's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) to win Academy Awards in all the major five categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is the only horror film to win Best Picture.
Honest Review of this film
Too many thrillers have I already watched. Anything you can think of, including "Identity," "Seven," "The Usual Suspects," etc. It drove me nuts when my friend became so fixated with "Silence of the Lambs." Naturally, I detested the film and refused to see it. However, everyone assured me that I must witness this, so I relaxed my guard. I'm pleased I did, and I also kept an open mind. I agree with my buddy that this is a fantastic film. It is acted so superbly that I am at a loss for words. "Silence of the Lambs" was fantastic, and I really recommend it. It's thrilling and unsettling. I'm sure you'll adore it.

The Silence of the Lambs movie Storyline / Plot
In 1990, Jack Crawford of the Bureau's Behavioral Science Unit summons Clarice Starling from her FBI training at the Quantico, Virginia FBI Academy. He assigns her to speak with jailed cannibalistic serial murderer Hannibal Lecter, a former doctor. Crawford thinks Lecter's wisdom may be helpful in the hunt for "Buffalo Bill," a psychopath serial murderer who kills young ladies and strips their skin from their corpses.
Dr. Frederick Chilton makes a rough pass at Starling in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane before leading her to Lecter's cell. Lecter is initially kind and polite but becomes frustrated with Starling's questioning and rejects her. A prisoner named Miggs flicks semen at her as she is leaving. Lecter phones Starling again and instructs her to locate his former patient since he views this as a "unspeakably disgusting" conduct. As a result, she is sent to a storage facility, where she finds a jar with a man's severed head inside of it. Lecter tells her to go back that the man has ties to Buffalo Bill. He offers to profile Buffalo Bill for free if Chilton, whom he despises, is sent somewhere.
Catherine Martin, the senator's daughter, is kidnapped by Buffalo Bill. Crawford gives Starling the go-ahead to provide Lecter with a fictitious agreement that includes a jail transfer in exchange for information that would allow them to apprehend Buffalo Bill and save Catherine. Lecter wants Starling to provide him with personal information in return for information about Buffalo Bill, but Starling refuses. Starling informs Lecter that when she was ten years old, her father was murdered. Chilton covertly records the exchange and informs Lecter of Starling's dishonesty before presenting him with an alternative proposition. Lecter accepts and is transported by air to Memphis, where he tortures Senator Martin and tells her erroneous information about Buffalo Bill, such as the fact that his name is "Louis Friend."
The anagram of "iron sulphide," or fool's gold, that "Louis Friend" represents is discovered by Starling. She meets Lecter, who is currently housed in a cell in a courthouse in Tennessee, and demands the truth. Lecter insists on continuing their trade-off after claiming that the Buffalo Bill case file has all the information she requires. She talks about how hearing spring lambs being butchered on a relative's Montana farm traumatised her as a youngster. Lecter surmises that Starling believes that by rescuing Catherine, her frequent dreams of wailing lambs would be put to rest. As Chilton arrives, Lecter gives Starling the Buffalo Bill case files and orders the cops to take her out of the facility. Later that night, Lecter murders his guards before breaking out of his prison cell and vanishing.
Starling studies Lecter's file notes and figures out that Buffalo Bill knew his first victim, Frederika Bimmel. When Starling returns to her Ohio homeland, she learns that Buffalo Bill and Bimmel were both tailors. Unfinished garments and dress designs with resemblances to the skin-removing victims' patches may be seen in Frederika's house. She tells Crawford over the phone that Buffalo Bill is producing a "suit" made of human skin. Crawford has already started on his way to make an arrest after comparing Lecter's notes with hospital records and discovering Jame Gumb, a guy who thinks he is transgender but was declared too crazy to want a sex-change procedure. Starling keeps speaking with Frederika's friends while Crawford and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team arrive to Gumb's Illinois residence and discover an empty home. Starling travels to speak with a different individual who knew Frederika in the meantime. She encounters "Jack Gordon" at the residence, but after observing a death's head moth flying loose, she learns he is Gumb. She chases after him into a vast basement where she discovers Catherine stranded in a dry well. Gumb uses night vision goggles to pursue Starling in a dimly lit space, but he makes himself known by cocking his handgun. Starling kills Gumb with a swift reaction.
Then, the next day, the next day, the next day, the next day, the next day, the next day, the next day, the next day, the next day. He tells her that he won't pursue her and asks her to repay the favour, which she declines to do. After that, Lecter ends the call as he is "having an old buddy for supper." He enters the crowd behind a fresh Chilton.
